Throat Pain (Sore Throat)

Most people that experience sore throats simply have a cold or flu that will go away on its own. However, there are some conditions or diseases that can cause throat pain, which gradually gets worse without treatment.

Apart from the common symptoms such as soreness, loss of voice, throbbing sensation, and pain while swallowing or talking, there are other symptoms as well. These may include enlarged neck glands, fever, fatigue, or sore muscles.

The most frequent cause of a sore throat is the flu or the common cold. Outside factors may also affect the throat, such as smoking, yelling, or allergies. Aside from these illnesses and irritations, other causes for throat pain may include:

  • Laryngitis: When the larynx becomes inflamed. The larynx is also known as the voice box.
  • Mononucleosis: Also known as mono or the kissing disease, this is often associated with a fever, tiredness, and swelling of the neck glands.
  • Mumps: When the salivary glands become infected. Sometimes mumps may cause pain or discomfort in the testicles.
  • Herpangina: This will often go away on its own, without treatment. Symptoms include sores filled with pus on the inside of the mouth and throat.
  • Strep Throat: This is the inflammation of the throat tissue.
  • Tonsillitis: When the tonsils become inflamed.
  • Adenoiditis: When the adenoids become inflamed.
  • Epiglottitis: When the epiglottis becomes inflamed.
  • Uvulitis: When the uvula becomes inflamed.
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: When stomach acid leaks into the bottom of the esophagus. This may cause a sore throat and is associated with heartburn.
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Throat pain may be caused by this syndrome. There are numerous additional symptoms, including tiredness after a normal amount of physical activity, sore muscles, headaches, and memory loss.

Due to the many different causes of throat pain, it is important that you visit your doctor if the pain is severe or if it persists for a long period of time. The proper treatment will then be outlined for you and set into action. If you wish to ease the pain while at home, try taking pain medications such as Acetaminophen, sipping on a hot drink, or using throat lozenges.
